Questions people ask

What is a good sentence length?

Aim for an average of 15 to 20 words. The American Press Institute found that readers understood over 90% of sentences of 14 words or fewer, falling to under 10% at 43 words. Mix lengths: an occasional short sentence adds punch; a long one is fine if it’s easy to follow.

How long is too long for a sentence?

Over 25 words deserves a second look, and over 35 almost always reads better split. This checker flags sentences over your chosen limit (25 by default) and shows every sentence as a bar so you can see the rhythm.

How do I shorten long sentences?

Split at the joints: “and”, “but”, “which”, “because”, semicolons. Move one idea per sentence. Cut wordy phrases (“due to the fact that”) and use active voice, which is usually shorter.

Does it count sentences and words?

Yes. It shows the total sentence count, word count, average and longest sentence, and the distribution of short, medium, long and very long sentences.
